The Fine Print

There are a lot of things that no one ever tells you about parenthood.  The fine print stuff.

One day, you learn it all the hard way.

They are the things that no one writes books about, that no one teaches in pregnancy classes.

In fact, those books and classes only make reading the fine print harder.  The books and the classes perpetuate the illusion of control in the eyes of soon to be parents.  The false notion that we can dictate our children's sleep schedules and eating habits, that we can prevent illnesses and keep kids on track with their milestones.  That we can plan.

Truth is, there really isn't a whole lot about parenting that is wholly within our control.

In large part, parenting is about realizing that you are truly just along for the ride.  You can try to steer the car, you can try to apply the brakes.  You can.  Ultimately, though, you learn that most of the time, you aren't even in the driver's seat.

As we have learned, and as have many people around us have learned, you often have no say over if and when children come into your life.  Sometimes you go to extreme lengths to try and have them, sometimes they surprise you when you least expect.

Buckle up, bring your camera, enjoy the trip.

It's one hell of a ride.
